I want to cut my hair really short with a shorn nape. Will it be possible to color or bleach the very short shaved hair in may nape or will this end up in a major disaster?

A: Yes, it is possible to color the hair in the shaved part of the style. The model’s hair in the picture is most probably colored or bleached to that light blonde.

The real question is whether you should attempt the coloring yourself, and what color your natural color is.

Let’s start with the first part of the question: should you do it yourself? If you have extensive experience with coloring and especially bleaching hair, then you could probably do it yourself without burning your hair or skin.

If your natural base-color is very light and you have a cool undertone, and you don’t have dark artificial color on your hair at the moment, you would probably be able to do this with a box of color bought at any hair and beauty outlet. Just remember to choose a color that is a level 9 or 10 with a cool/ash undertone.

If you have to bleach your hair before toning it, you should do a patch-test in the neck area to see how your skin reacts to bleach being applied directly to the scalp. This could cause a nasty chemical burn if you have sensitive skin, thus most manufacturers and hairdressers advise strongly against applying bleach directly to the scalp.

If you don’t have sufficient experience with color or bleach, I’d advise you to go to the salon to have the coloring done. The last thing that you want is to end up with yellow or extensively damaged/burned off hair. If you’re going from really dark hair to this very light color, you’ll probably find it hard to find a hairdresser who will be prepared to attempt this drastic change in one go. Especially if you already have red, black or dark brown artificial color on your hair.

Hairdressers also tend to be wary of applying strong bleach directly to the client’s scalp, as this could result in chemical burns, which would be a huge potential liability to the stylist and the salon. But there are salons and stylist who specialize in expressive and artful hairstyles such as this one, so if you select the right salon, you will find someone who will be prepared to do it, as long as you understand the potential dangers involved.
