Firstly, add a smoothing cream and a heat protector to just-washed hair before blow-drying it straight. Then, straighten the dry hair with a flat iron, working in small, horizontal sections for maximum straightness. The hair in the crown should first be straightened, but then it can be back-combed a bit in the crown area for an added height effect. Spray the hair with a silicone-based shine spray to keep out the humidity and get the most shine out of the added product.

If you're going to an especially formal event, such as a ball, a dress-up affair, or even your own wedding, you should definitely consider wearing a diamante crown, colored feathers, or some sort of clip or hair accessory at the crown or top of your head to add some height to the style. The taller you appear, the narrower your face will look by default. The color play and added dimensions of these objects also shift the focus of the eye away from noticing a round or wide facial silhouette, as the eye tends to focus on movement or brightness.

There are also cutting techniques to remember when creating a slimmer, more narrow look. Your scissors should be held at an inward or downward 45-degree angle while cutting the hair. This will encourage the hair to curl inward instead of outward. When the hair curls inward, it follows the silhouette of the face.

Since the layers framing the face should all be longer than chin level, the slope of the hair should be more or less flush with the cheekbones and chin, creating a naturally slim look. If you were to cut the hair at a 45-degree angle upwards or outwards, the hair would curl in an outward or concave curl, which would automatically make the face look much broader.

The stylist should also avoid using thinning shears or a razor in the mid-lengths. Hair tends to puff up or become frizzy when it has been thinned out. The thinning shears can be a great help in reducing bulk along the sides of the hair, especially for very thick or very wavy hair. Yet the stylist should still remember to hold the thinning shears at an inward and downward 45-degree angle to ensure that the hair follows the line of the face.

There lies great power in incorporating elements, styles, colors, and accessories to make a wide face look narrower, slimmer, and, by default, more youthful. Also keep in mind that your hairdresser or stylist will be more than willing to show you how to use all of the aforementioned tips in practical ways that will best suit your needs.

Play around with everything mentioned here and discover what looks best on your face. Take pictures when each style or look is completed so you can best observe which look suits your profile best from all angles. Have fun styling!
