Q: I plan to cut my hair to shoulder length, but I’m not sure yet. It’s bra strap length now. What are the positive and negative effects of shoulder length hair on a woman’s overall look?

A: It’s always fun to change your hair every once in a while, but also really good to weigh the pros and cons beforehand, like you’re doing. This goes a long way to ensure that you’re not disappointed or upset when you’ve taken that step to have your hair cut.

A shoulder length cut is actually a very versatile and maintenance friendly haircut and it’s not such an extreme step away from having long hair. Let’s look at the positive points first:

1. Shoulder length hair will never go out of style, and can be deemed as a “timeless classic cut”. Have a look at pictures of popular hairstyles through the ages, and you’ll see that the shoulder length cut will always be present. This is because this length of hair is usually a universally flattering, low maintenance and versatile cut. You can still wear your hair up or down, depending on personal taste, the occasion, etc.

2. If you’re used to long hair, you’ll find that the shorter hair uses less maintenance products such as shampoo, conditioner, treatment, etc. The hair is obviously shorter, so less product is needed to keep your hair in good shape.

3. This is also a good time to get rid of all those unhealthy broken hairs or split ends. Even really healthy looking long hair tends to have split or unhealthy ends. Blow drying, styling, coloring, brushing, swimming, wind and the sunshine tend to damage hair over time. Because the tips of long hair are older, it has been exposed to these elements for a longer period of time, making it more susceptible to breakage, etc.

4. A change can be as good as a holiday. If you’re going to be cutting your hair, try incorporating some new color as well. Have some lowlights or highlights done, or change the color of your hair. Changing your look can be really empowering and exciting, so treat yourself to the whole service.

5. If you don’t like the new length and miss your long hair, you won’t have to wait very long for it to grow back. If you cut your hair into a pixie or something similar, it can take years to grow your hair back into a long style. Thus shoulder length hair is much less of a risk if you’re unsure whether you’ll like the shorter hair.

There are also a few possible negatives:

1. It’s possible that one-length shoulder-length hair can make your face look too long or dragged down. You’ll have to ask your hairdresser if your face shape will look good with a shoulder length cut.

2. If your hair is slightly wavy while its long, it’s possible that the waves will become curlier when the hair is shorter, because of the decreased downward pull. There’s unfortunately no accurate way to know how the structure of your hair will change, except for actually cutting it and then analyzing the wave/curl of the hair.
