Q: My boyfriend thinks that I spend too much time on my hair. My hair is long and a bit wavy. Styling with a round brush or flat iron takes forever. How short should I cut it to make it more manageable? I want something that only takes a couple of minutes to style.

A: Firstly, I think that you should decide whether you want to cut your hair because you’re ready for the change, or because your boyfriend gets annoyed about how long it takes you to get ready.

If this decision is based solely on your boyfriend’s opinion, you’re probably going to be unhappy with short hair and possibly ending up resenting him and yourself for chopping off your locks. If you realize that you want to keep your long hair, I suggest the following:

Start getting ready to go out an hour earlier than you usually do. This will ensure that you can relax during your primping time, feel good about yourself and avoid irritating your boyfriend. Set boundaries with your boyfriend. A healthy relationship equals both individuals respecting and accepting each other, despite their differences.

You can also opt to go for a Brazilian Keratin blow-out. During this process, extra keratin protein and other nourishment are added to the hair’s structure. The result is silky smooth hair that doesn’t need to be blow dried or straightened. The process lasts a few months and eliminates most of the hassle pertaining hairstyling. Do a bit of research on this and ask your stylist about it before you make a decision.

If you feel that you’re ready for a change and want to cut your hair, that’s great too. I would suggest either going for a layered, below the shoulder length cut or a graduated bob that ends just above the shoulders.

You say that your hair is a bit wavy now… This means that your hair could be curly once it is much shorter, thus the layered cut would probably be safer, regarding shortest styling time. Ask your hairstylist whether he or she thinks that your hair will be curly once it’s shorter before making this decision, though.

Layers are cool because you can keep a bit of length while still cutting your styling time dramatically. Ask the stylist to cut the layers quite short in the crown area, while your hair still hangs below your shoulders. Keep the layers longer around the face. Layers take off most of the bulk of the hair, while thinning it out as well. This means that you’ll be able to get away with air drying or quickly blow drying your hair, even without a brush.

The off-the-shoulder length graduated bob is also great because the length at the back is minimal, which saves you A LOT of time when styling it. The longer hair at the front still makes it look like you have medium-length hair, which is a versatile and economic length.

Both these looks can be worn in a wavy or straight style. If you airdry your hair, use something like “It’s a 10 Miracle Leave in Treatment”. This product minimizes frizz or dryness, while leaving the hair silky smooth and relatively straight, even without using a hair dryer or flat iron.
