Hair Salon Mats

Q: Why are so many hairdressers standing on a rubber mat when cutting hair?

A: There are a few reasons for those rubber mats. Firstly, it is usually a black, high-quality heavy-duty rubber material, which means that it protects the floor from getting stained by dripping color or other chemical damage. Also, it keeps the hair that falls to the ground during haircuts, from being walked all over to floor, to an extent.

But its biggest selling-point is that it eases the strain on one's back and legs from standing all day long. The theory behind it is that it is softer than the hard and unforgiving surface of typical salon tiles. If you've done your fair share of being a stylist, or even/especially waitering, you'll know what being on your feet all day long does to your body especially your feet.

Now, stylists are a rare and enigmatic breed. They prefer to go big or go home. Thus, stylists often opt to wear high-heels and a blinding smile all through the day. While standing on those lovely pedicured feet for hours on end. Standing in those stilettos, on that mat, eases the strain somewhat. Or we believe it does. And sometimes that's one and the same thing.
