Bangs for Kids

Q: I think I will give my son and daughter bangs to make their hair more manageable. Is this a good idea?

A: Have you asked your children whether they actually want bangs? Are they old enough to decide for themselves? This would probably be my starting point if I were you. Remember that they are the ones who will have to live with their hairstyle every day.

If it's not something that either of them wants, they could end up resenting you. How often do we hear stories of how people still blame their parents for being unhappy with hairstyles, clothes or other things that were taken away from them during their childhoods?

If their hair is really unmanageable; chances are good that they'll be asking for bangs, as they're the ones who also have to cope with their hair on a day-to-day basis. But, it really is best to include them in a decision like that.

You also have to take into account what kind of structure their hair is. Curly hair or wavy hair, or hair with cowlicks or strong growth-patterns can be very hard to cope with if you're not used to styling your hair every day, especially in the case of boys.

I would really suggest to first ask the kids regarding their view on having bangs cut, and take it from there. If the children are game for this, I would say that you should give it a go. Bangs can simplify the lives of parents and children a lot as having bangs takes away the bulk of hair on top of the head. As the hair on the top section is usually the longest, this is also where most knots and tangles originate; especially after the hair has been washed, or after waking up from sleep.

Boys usually enjoy bangs as they can style it with wax or gel to stand up straight, or in more messy “bed head” styles that are particularly trendy right now. Because having bangs automatically means that the hair is shorter as well, these types of boys haircuts are usually very neat; which makes it good for school as well.

Girls love bangs because it can transform even an everyday ponytail look into a really cool style. Especially diagonal bangs are so cool right now. These bangs are really versatile especially for girls as it can be pinned to the back or even braided to the side.

Ask the stylist to thin their bangs out adequately to minimize tangles, and to get rid of most of the bulk. Maintaining bangs is pretty simple as well. Just have them trimmed every few months to keep the hair from falling into their eyes.
