Faster Hair Growth

Q: I have mid length hair now, and I want it to be longer. If I wash and condition my hair every other day, do you think that will help my hair grow faster? My hair is like a little past my shoulders.

A: I wish I could say "Yes", because if that worked, every woman who wanted long luxurious hair would have it. Unfortunately, your hair will grow as fast as it grows.

On average, a person's hair grows half an inch each month or 6 inches in a year. Some people's hair grows faster, some slower. It's all a matter of genetics.

However, there are things you can do to make sure you grow the best hair you can. These include:

• Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of protein, and foods rich in vitamins C, A, and E. The body needs these things to grow hair.

• Keep your hair and your scalp clean and conditioned. A clean scalp helps prevent blemishes and other scalp irritations that can inhibit or effect hair growth, while keeping the hair conditioned helps reduce the loss of length due to breakage and fraying at the ends.

• Get plenty of rest and appropriate amounts of exercise. These things help you deal with stress, which can have adverse effects on the body and therefore can affect hair growth.

There are other common sense tips that you already are aware of, such as: avoid heat styling appliances whenever possible, treat the hair gently, etc., that will help prevent damage to the hair and keep you from having set-backs in your growth process.
