Hairdresser's Skills

Hairdresser and salon client

Q: Is it true that a hairdresser who is good at cutting hair is usually not so good at coloring and vice versa?

A: No, there’s no such a hard and fast rule. There are a lot of hairdressers that are masters at all fields of hairdressing, including cutting, coloring, perming, styling, etc. This is especially true in the case of older stylists that work in high-end salons or run their own salons. You’ll find that these stylists won’t let anyone else touch their clients’ hair, apart from having the basin assistants washing and massaging the clients.

There does seem to be a tendency among the younger generations of stylists to prefer certain procedures. But this will be true in any profession or walk of life. In any job, there are certain things that you will like more than other tasks. It is also probable that you will excel in the parts of your work that you enjoy most, but this most definitely doesn’t mean that you’re not competent at the tasks that you don’t enjoy as much.

These days, there is a huge market for stylists that excel at a certain area of hairdressing. This phenomenon is largely contributed to the workings of backstage action of catwalk modeling shows, movies, TV commercials, etc. If you ever have the chance to visit one of these shoots or back stages, you’ll see that different stylists are all busy doing different work on the hair or faces of a multitude of models. This is partly because certain stylists or make-up artists excel at a certain procedure, but also because this makes the whole process of getting the models stage-ready much faster and cost-effective.

This concept has been integrated into the working-process of lots of high-end salons, especially in the fashion capitols of the world. Employing a team of stylists that each excels in a specific field makes business sense. Delegating parts of the process like this means that the salon runs like a glamorous, well-oiled machine.

Each client is treated to cutting-edge talent by different stylists that are all the best in their field, while the process time is cut down as well. This means that the salon can work in lots of more clients, while the end-product, (cut, color and style), is always stellar quality. And although a particular stylist then is very good at coloring as she/he does it every day, all day long, this by no means implies that he/she isn’t talented at cutting hair.
